Design notes: how Data Fall was built
A wrong answer costs nothing. There is an error tone, the input buffer clears, and that is the end of it — a deliberate choice rather than an oversight, because the game is already applying pressure through the falling drops and punishing a mistyped digit on top of that turns a thinking game into a typing test.
When a typed answer matches more than one drop, the game destroys the lowest one. Drops are sorted by vertical position before matching, so answering a number that is on screen twice always removes the more urgent of the two. Without that, the game occasionally rewards a correct answer by clearing the safe copy and letting the dangerous one keep falling.
The screen is never fully cleared. Each frame paints black at 20% alpha over the previous one instead of erasing, which produces the motion trail behind every drop for free. The exception is a breach: that draws one frame of solid white with no fade at all, because a flash that eases out reads as an effect and a flash that simply happens reads as damage.
