Design notes: how Space Shooter was built
Difficulty is tied to score, not to a clock. The spawn interval closes as max(20, 60 - score / 500) frames and enemy speed carries a score * 0.001 term, so a player who is shooting well is the reason the game gets harder. Surviving passively keeps the pressure flat, which makes the run length a function of skill rather than patience.
Firing is automatic on a fifteen frame cycle. Removing the fire button leaves exactly one thing to think about, which is where the ship is — and in a game played with a thumb on a phone, a second control would cost more than it adds.
There are no image files. The ship and the UFOs are SVG documents written inline in the source and base64-encoded into data URIs at load. It keeps the game a single self-contained file with zero network requests, which is the constraint every game on this site is built under: the same file that runs here can be handed to a portal without an asset bundle.
